Drug eluting balloons CCSVI angioplasty

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

The usage of drug-eluting ballooons for Angioplasty is increasing globally and cardiologists at the Clinics of the Heart under the guidance of Dr. Rafael Moguel are now adopting this to treat CCSVI multiple sclerosis patients. Angioplasty, a proven technique of mechanically widening an obstructed blood vessel is widely practiced by interventional cardiologists to remove blockages in arteries. Angioplasties with simple or conventional balloons are commonly practiced. And now drug-eluting devices are another option for doctors and patients.

This technology may be particularly useful for people that suffer from multiple sclerosis that have the condition known as CCSVI. After many studies and reports, usage of drug-eluting device for angioplasty is increasing globally and has been adopted in Mexico by Dr. Moguel’s Clinics of the Heart.

In drug-eluting device angioplasty, a balloon like device coated with a drug developed with matrix technology (paclitaxel) is kept inflated at the fatty deposits in artery or the vein for up to 45 seconds. Within this time, like an osmosis effect, the drug is absorbed by fatty deposits. This treatment is particularly preferred in cases of restenosis as studies in Europe have shown that the restenosis rate is much lower (less than 10%).

The drug-eluting device is also found to be safer than stents in long run as there was lower incidence of blood clotting in arteries.
