CCSVI Restenosis and Drug Eluting Balloons
Monday, April 23rd, 2012At the Clinics of the Heart in Cozumel we have seen that a majority of our patients have enjoyed clear, substancial and measurable neurological, cognitive and mobility improvements soon after their CCSVI angioplasty yet unfortunately some feel that their symptoms are returning. The reason for this is restenosis, this means that the veins have narrowed again, regardless of where they were treated.
At the Clinics of the Heart in Cozumel we are in continuous search of ways of preventing this problem, in August 2011, we began deploying special medicated or drug eluting balloons that are capable of delivering medication directly to the treated vein. This medication is Paclitaxel which reduces cell replication.
These balloons are safe and have been widely deployed in arteries, showing clear benefits in reducing the restenosis events. The drug eluting balloons are not FDA approved but have become common practice in Europe and Latinamerica.
If you have been treated for CCSVI and you think that you have restenosed (MS symptoms returning) we suggest you get tested as soon as you can. The MRV is expensive and inaccurate yet a neck ultrasound can be very helpful at a fraction of the cost.
