Peripheral

Atherosclerosis is a systemic disease and it causes major arterial obstructions because of thrombosis of important arteries in the body, such as the arteries that gives blood to the heart and brain.

Also atherosclerosis is responsible of limb amputation and physical disability for intermittent claudication, when a person suffers from painful walking. When this problem worsens pain can be present even at rest.

The circulatory, arterial insufficiency can cause some complications as ischemic, painful ulcers in the leg, the ankle and the foot or both feet, with the final infection and possible partial or complete amputation.

Actually diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis are the major causes of non-traumatic limb amputations in the world.

The state of the art on limb rescue includes catheterization of the peripheral arteries, with the aim of circulatory restitution by revascularization using percutaneous treatments such as balloons, stents or catheters designed for thrombus aspiration.

These techniques of catheterization can be applied to other arterial obstructions. That is the case of renal artery obstruction, mesenteric obstruction (bowel ischemia) among others.

Erectile disfunction is a very frequent manifestation of peripheral artery disease.

We at the Clinics of the Heart have the solution for this problem.
